We had our second hit of snow this year, and sadly it's only October. Unfortunately, the snow won't last long and probably won't hit again like this til mid November, but regardless, the hit of snow has hit me with some realization.
People commonly, or rather, always say that Spring is the season of awakening and new life. Today, I'd beg to differ and argue that point with people. Winter is not my favorite season, but it is on my list of "Things I Like". After walking out and taking my first breath of the the cool, crisp winter air, I realized something - I really like winter. I don't like winter for the fact that it's fricken cold but the fact that it brings things together. It brings, most commonly, friends and families together; when it's cold, people generally tend to want to stay inside more, therefore more time spent with loved ones. It brings our parts together... as in, when it's cold, we wear extra socks, extra layers of clothing, mittens/gloves, and we get all bundled up. Who doesn't love to get bundled up?
On top of bringing people together, many of our most beloved holidays fall in the winter. Christmas or Hanukkah is the most prominent holiday when we celebrate our love and thanksgiving (on top of thanksgiving) for each other. New years for us to celebrate, well, the new year to come and the lessons learned from the one passed. And last but not least Valentine's Day. Who doesn't love a little lovin' on that one special time of the year; and I don't care what everyone else likes to say, but valentine's day is not, I repeat not only for couples! Regardless of what kind of connotation that word may bring, it still brings people who love and care for each other together - and that's all that matters in the end.
Now I'll ask the question, why do people hate winter so much? Is it because of all the snow that we have to shovel? Or the bone-chilling winds we have to endure waiting at bus stops? I think it could be one or both of those choices, but I also think we should take some time to reflect on the fact that winter, however frigid and deathly it may seem, is really a season to remind us of the great people in our lives, and to teach us how to cherish them.
On a lighter note, I took some pictures with my phone this morning of the snow. Sorry for the poor quality pictures, I refused to step outside for a picture, so both pictures were taken through my window :)
In psychology, we constantly learn this theory called the Bystander Effect. If you are a psychology major, or have come in some sort of contact with psychology, then you'd understand what I'm talking about.
The Bystander Effect basically then, and you could understand, sums up what we do each day. The literal definition of Bystander Effect would be, as my textbook describes it,
"The larger the number of people present, the less likely it is any of them will volunteer to help in an emergency situation."
Okay, so some of you may sit there and think, "What does she mean, I could understand?" I mean, we could understand because everyday, we indirectly walk away from situations which we think someone might be already dealing with. I've been reading the paper and it seems that many of these attacks and murders these days may have potentially been prevented if we really just opened our eyes to what's going on and stop ignoring something and hoping someone else will deal with the problem.
Let's now take this another notch down, closer to our personal selves. How many people in the past month have we thought about talking to and seeing what's up with them, and yet we push it aside because we have better things to do, and that person will have others to talk with. I noticed that it seems to be a trend with people to simply ignore certain broken friendship and relationships and couple months down the road begin to wonder, why has that relationship broken? Let's all begin to see the hurt and the broken things around us, and instead of letting someone else "beat you to the punch", why don't you step out and offer that helping hand - you never know when you'd need it in return.
Thanks for reading!
PS. It's getting quite chilly outside, bundle up everyone - It's going to be a cold winter. PPS. Strikes suck!0 CommentsLinks to this post

Struggle
There are many things that we each struggle with each day. I'm not going to sit here and begin writing the list of struggles that I have, but I've had my share within the past few days, weeks, months. However, I can't keep but continue to remind myself to never give up trying until it's impossible.
When a new day begins, dare to smile gratefully. When there is darkness, dare to be the first to shine a light. When there is injustice, dare to be the first to condemn it. When something seems difficult, dare to do it anyway. When life seems to beat you down, dare to fight back. When there seems to be no hope, dare to find some. When you're feeling tired, dare to keep going. When times are tough, dare to be tougher. When love hurts you, dare to love again. When someone is hurting, dare to help them heal. When another is lost, dare to help them find the way. When a friend falls, dare to be the first to extend a hand. When you cross paths with another, dare to make them smile. When you feel great, dare to help someone else feel great too. When the day has ended, dare to feel as you've done your best. Dare to be the best you can At all times, Dare to be! --Steve Maraboli
I am a proud supporter of Charmin toilet paper. Some people say that all toilet papers are the same, but I strongly advise everyone to go out and buy a pack of Charmin and experience the joy of going to the washroom.
I know this is a totally random, and probably disturbing post, but really... go out and buy some Charmin.
It's thanksgiving weekend, and I must admit, I haven't had much time to reflect or even do something so simple as think of something I'm thankful for to share at church. I quickly thought of something that's been on my mind for the past few day, which was how happy I am to be living a somewhat balanced lifestyle with work, school, volunteer (soon), friends, and family; however, this is not all, and not really what I'm thankful for.
What I'm really thankful is something we all take for granted day-in and day-out. It's something so small and insignificant that it could make us blind and do crazy things. It makes us cry and makes us laugh. It's the one thing in our lives that we all strive for, doesn't matter who it's from. It comes unexpectedly, and yet we are so expectant for it to come. If you don't know what I'm talking about by now, you should really re-evaluate the relationships in your life. (that's mean). IRREGARDLESS(and I know that's not a word), the simple yet crazy feeling is love.
We get love from, most importantly, our families. The unconditional and agape love, which sees wrongs and still will strive to grow stronger with you. We get love from our significant others. A peaceful and helpful kind of love, the kind of love which is willing work together as a team to grow for a better purpose. We get love from our friends, regardless of the distance. These friendships which we keep dear to our hearts should forever remain, times may change, and people may change, but a strong bond could never be broken.
These four letters of the alphabet create such a strong and beautiful impact in our lives. I'm thankful for the love I receive everyday, regardless if it's direct or indirect. I think that we should all take even 5 minutes out of your thanksgiving day to think about all the love we are and have been given, and then reciprocate this love to others around us.
Today I went to T&T with my mom to purchase some groceries. While I was pushing around my shopping cart full of goodies, something struck my eyes. You all know of those backpack on wheels? Well I'm proud to introduce to those who do not know yet, shopping baskets on wheels! When I saw these darling litle shopping baskets on wheels I just had to get one of my own.
Let's all put our hands together and welcome probably the most shopper friendly thing (next to a shopping cart)... Basket On Wheels!
Now, I know not everyone shares with me this enthusiasm for these baskets on wheels, but I really do think that this is a very shopper friendly invention. Kudos to those brilliant people who came up with this. Just a simple sharing with you all!
jennahsu.blogspot.com now has an email address! You can find it under the About Me section on your left, on my full profile or here: jenhsu@ymail.com
This is purely a test run kind of project for me, but it has been drawn to my attention, and I did this on purpose, that I do not have a comments box and I did in fact take away my chat box.
I have had some of you speak to me about my blog via messenger and other mediums, so therefore I have create for you readers (and my personal stuff) a new email account where you could make comments or send me questions about anything.
I'm not really expecting a big craze over this email, just a little something for you wonderful readers when you need it. As always,
There are only a few interesting things that happen in my life day to day. When I'm in class I am engaged in my prof's lecture and the material being presented; but on the odd occasion, I see something interesting and I can't help but to look and be curious.
Today, the strangest thing struck me. I sat beside this girl that I've seen many times before in this class, and I have noticed before but today it really struck me, she relay eats a lot of Tic Tac's!! Now, when I say alot I mean averaging 2 boxes per class. I was really appalled by the fact that she eats these Tic Tac's like it was candy, one after another. So I started wondering how much money she really spends on those little addicting pieces of sweetness.
Here are my calculations...
If she eats about 2 packs a class, and she must at least have 5 classes a week, each pack at $1.19 each: 1.19 * 2 = 2.38 * 5 = 11.90 / Per week $12.00
There are 4 weeks in a month (obviously): 12.00 * 4 = $48.00/month
There are 12 months in a year (another obvious fact): 48.00 * 12 = $576/year
Think of all the food that you could buy with $576, but instead it's wasted on these tiny pieces of menthol sugar.
Now I realized, there are certain unnecessary items in our lives that we indulge ourselves in, but I want to ask everyone and myself, are these small insignificant pleasures worth it?
ON TO OTHER BREAKING NEWS! I got a new phone today... It's a brand new beautiful Nokia 5310. She's absolutely beautiful and works brilliantly. Just what I wanted a need, a simple, fully functional phone, and yet with the same beautiful look as my Moto Krzr. I'm a phone junkie, I like new cellphone technologies, and I know quite a bit about them, but I will not invest hundreds in a phone (i.e. blackberry/HTC/iPhone) which have a million functions I do not need. So for now, I am content with this beauty of mine.
I find that people are getting progressively more and more greedy now days. I was just doing a quick scan of what's going on in the lives of everyone via facebook and something struck me when I went to go look at those ever so annoying group and application requests! (yes, this is an indirect hit to those who would not stop sending me those stupid, yes, stupid requests!)... (or those people I don't know, who went to my highschool, trying to add me so their friends list could look huge. I on the other hand, don't have a friends list just for numbers)
Anyway, back to my point away from my facebook hater side. I found something extremely ironic, shown below:I then thought to myself, Mark Zuckerberg is one of the richest people under 25 I believe, and he wants 20 million to change back something that he created? If I didn't doubt his intelligence, I'd think he hired some genious china people and chained them in his basement to run facebook for him. Oh Wait! I DO doubt his intelligence, because when users of his program don't like something, that MUST mean he should continue doing it right?
So for a while now, some of my youtube subcriptions have been promoting this stop smoking campaign. I'd like to also think of myself as a good advocate for supporting worthwhile campaigns, so therefore, I would like to spread the awareness. This campaign was started by the American Cancer Society to help teens and people in general to know the risk of smoking. Here are some of the "awareness" items from my subscriptions:
1) ndtitanlady
2) davidchoimusic
3) wongfuproductions
And with a bit of my own vanity, I've created, or rather just manipulated the picture template to make my out XOUTCIG advertisement. CUT THEM CIGZ OUT, YO!
I just want to stop and spend a moment to share this song with everyone. There's a general trend on my blog and it's about making ourselves better for a happier more peaceful world. I think that this song embodies and sums up everything that I feel should be something everyone should keep on their hearts. Could you just imagine for just a moment in time, all the world is at peace?
You may say that I'm a dreamer But I'm not the only one I hope someday you'll join us And the world will be as one
I was inspired to write this blurb 1) I heard this song earlier today and 2) there is another accident at Finch & Bathurst tonight for the second time in two weeks. There are car parts all over the road and bodies motionless and in life-threatening conditions. Life's so precious and really, there isn't much we could live for than to have those we love most know that we love them. Now go find someone you love, give them a hug and let them know just how amazing they are.
